The Constitution is the foundation of the country. The preamble of the constitution tells us what the dreams of nation building were after independence. The constitution itself guaranteed the rights of citizens and also underlined their duties. The constitution enshrines the values of justice, equity, independence, secularism and fraternity. But we find that these values have been negated by society and proper knowledge was not disseminated on them. This is the reason that the level of constitutional awareness in our society is not as expected. The biggest cause of this failure to implement the book called Constitution in real life. Actually, constitutional values are missing in the current discourse in the country. ‘Nagarikshala’ (Civic School) is an initiative with the Constitution as the focal point. The attempt of Vikas Samvad through Nagarikshala is to link different sections of the society to make an integrated effort.

Vikas Samvad is preparing resource material on constitutional values in such simple and acceptable language that could reach the people directly and also mirror the constitution. The attempt is also to highlight the historical journey of the Constitution. The resource material is being constantly prepared in audio-visual as well as readable formats. Also to reach the constitutional value to the people, there is an attempt to link it to ground level works. Different sections of society such as youth, women, people’s representatives, media workers and lawyers are being involved in the process so that the knowledge on constitutional values reaches maximum people. A fellowship programme is being designed for this purpose, in which about 30 persons would be included.
