Intervention with Support of Bhaskar Foundation

Donation of Ration Kits to the Families

The family ration kits supported by Bhaskar Foundation has arrived timely in this area when the migrant construction workers population is reeling under an economic crisis far away from their homes. We are distributing these kits to mainly construction workers, nomadic tribes, daily wages laborer’s and the old/infirm in Salaiya, Akriti Eco City, Aam Nagar, Ayodhya Nagar, Mira Nagar Banjara Basti, Kolar and Ravishankar Nagar.

Salaiya gav has a separate mazdoor community where many are non-ration card holders. As a priority, we have given out food kits to 7 non-ration card holder families.

A local girl is listing non-ration card holders which can be later submitted to the ward/zone office for receiving PDS food grains under food security entitlements announced by the government.

Aakriti Ecocity houses many construction sites. Clusters of construction workers live in and around these sites. Some workers are taken care of by their contractors, builders, colony residents or even food distribution units passing by. Many construction workers have left for their villages in various

districts  either by foot or taking lifts from passing vehicles. Many are reported to be stuck in some mid-way districts. The ration kits we distributed to families who have stayed behind, have no support from contractors or builders. They are stranded here with little cash left in hand, unreachable by food distribution units and in a state of high distress. About 37 families were supported with kits.

Aam Nagar, we have identified an elderly, physically couple to whom the ration kit has been given. Other families are being identified in Aam Nagar.

Meera Nagar, Banjara Basti, we have handed out kits to Banjara families who do not receive ration from food distribution units since they live at the far end of the basti. 10 kits have been distributed here to construction workers from nearby sites.

Salaiya construction sites: visits are throwing up more number of construction workers stuck on their sites. A group of 100 workers from various districts in MP, Bihar and CG were surveyed. They received -45 ration kits. We are also trying to assist them to get back to their home districts through the migrant workers helpline numbers. Most workers are from Mandla, Seoni, Narsinghpur, Damoh, Sagar, Raipur and Bilaspur. We also spoke to their contractor who is unable to reach them due to the lockdown. We have managed to connect them with local MLA and organizations in Mandla.

Ambedkar Nagar, Kolar, Danish Kunj: -45 families daily wage workers and construction workers received family ration kits. They do receive food packets at times from food distribution units. But, with their dwindling home rations, this is not enough.  A local volunteer couple helped us identity needy families and reaches it to them. However, there are many more families who are in dire need of aid. We were requested by a group of about 50 families for ration.

Ravishankar Nagar: 35 kits were distributed to labourer families residing in hutments. Our assoicates from Sahara Saksharta helped us reach the families.

Students from Bihar and other states: 20 Ration kits were distributed to 20 rooms shared by around 60 students. These students have come to Bhopal to study. They have run out of ration and cash. Many of these students are undergoing depression since they are unable to go home or organize food for themselves. Based on the calls received on our Ward   helplines, we have reached the kits, added sanitary napkins and to the same and reached it to the group.

Raisen Road and Ayodhya Nagar: 12 kits were distributed to mazdoor families in Ayodhya Nagar. These families were not receiving any aid from government or food supply units. Our volunteers from associate food supply units helped us reach the ration to the families.

Rohit Nagar: Distributed 7 ration kits to construction workers in Rohit Nagar. These families were referred by an associate organization.
